DESIGN CHALLENGES
The design for the new DU Engineering Building included an acoustically perfect dome with a diamond-shaped skylight as the oculus. The skylight was segmented to match the shape of the dome, each piece a compound curve. In addition, the design featured a chandelier hanging from the center. In order to preserve the custom diamond shaped copper metal roofing, the skylight needed to be pre-assembled and craned into place. The building was designed to LEED Gold Certification Criteria.
SOLUTION
In order to create a compound curve, each section was treated as an individual skylight, which was then mulled together in the field. Utilizing DĀLYTE’s Applied Pressure Bar System on top of separate aluminum tubes allowed us to use 3” x 3” tubes for every division. The compound curve shape of the dome was mimicked by segmenting each piece of glass. The pressure bar on every division is sloped in two directions to create a curve. In-house fabrication and a modular system was essential in delivering a final product that matched the architectural vision.

“We are a local roofing company that has been purchasing skylights from DĀLYTE for quite a while. They have always done a great job with every order we place with them and everyone there is very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!”
“DĀLYTE is the only skylight company that Elite Roofing trusts. They go above and beyond the help determine your needs then finding an easy solution to your problems. They also let insurance companies know that you need to replace your full skylight and not just reglaze the existing one.”
